India’s Finished Steel Exports Jump 36.6% in April–February, Strengthening Global Market Presence
India has recorded a sharp increase in finished steel exports during the first eleven months of the financial year, reflecting stronger global demand and expanding domestic production capacity.
According to provisional government data, India exported 6.02 million metric tonnes of finished steel between April and February, marking a 36.6% year-on-year rise. The surge highlights the growing competitiveness of Indian steel manufacturers in international markets.
India currently ranks as the second-largest crude steel producer in the world, driven by rising demand from sectors such as infrastructure, construction and manufacturing.
Imports Decline as Domestic Production Strengthens
While exports rose significantly, finished steel imports into India fell sharply during the same period.
Imports declined by 37.4% year-on-year, bringing total inbound shipments down to 5.6 million metric tonnes. The drop suggests increasing reliance on domestic production and improved capacity among Indian steelmakers.
At the same time, India’s crude steel output reached 153.61 million metric tonnes, representing an 11.2% increase compared with the previous year.
Domestic Consumption Also Expands
Demand within India’s domestic market has also remained strong.
Consumption of finished steel grew 7.2% year-on-year, reaching 147.7 million metric tonnes during the period. The growth reflects robust activity across sectors that heavily rely on steel, including infrastructure development, engineering, and construction projects.
Government-led infrastructure initiatives and expanding manufacturing activity have been key drivers behind the rise in domestic steel demand.
India’s Growing Role in the Global Steel Market
The combined growth in production, exports and domestic consumption highlights the resilience of India’s steel sector despite fluctuations in global commodity markets.
Industry analysts say the performance indicates that Indian steel producers are increasingly capable of competing with major international suppliers. Rising production capacity and improved efficiency have helped the country strengthen its presence in global steel trade.
As demand for steel continues to grow across emerging economies, India’s expanding manufacturing base could further enhance its position in the global supply chain.
