Rahul Gandhi Responds Positively to Telangana CM’s Call to Lead Opposition as PM Face: Report
The conversation around the potential Prime Ministerial face of the Opposition has started gaining momentum years ahead of the next general elections. According to party leaders, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi has responded positively to a proposal from Revanth Reddy, the Chief Minister of Telangana, urging him to emerge as the Prime Ministerial candidate of the Opposition alliance.
The development came during a training programme organised for District Congress Committee (DCC) presidents from Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. Addressing the gathering, Revanth Reddy reportedly encouraged Rahul Gandhi to accept the responsibility of leading the Opposition as its PM candidate.
Congress MP Mallu Ravi confirmed the interaction while speaking to media, stating that Rahul Gandhi responded favourably to the request. According to Ravi, party leaders and workers strongly believe Gandhi is a credible contender for the country’s top executive office.
Ravi also highlighted Rahul Gandhi’s political legacy, noting that he belongs to a family that has made significant sacrifices in the service of the nation. He added that Gandhi’s visit to the state was aimed at guiding party leaders and workers from both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.
Training Session for Congress Leaders
Rahul Gandhi attended the concluding session of the leadership training programme held at Haritha Resorts in the scenic Ananthagiri Hills in Vikarabad district. The event brought together key Congress functionaries from the two states to discuss party organisation, strategy, and grassroots mobilisation.
He was accompanied by senior Congress leader K. C. Venugopal, who has been actively involved in strengthening the party’s organisational structure across several regions.
Early Signals of Leadership Contest Within Opposition
The discussion about who could lead the Opposition alliance—commonly known as the INDIA bloc—has already begun, even though the next general elections are still some years away.
While the Indian National Congress is projecting Rahul Gandhi as a natural candidate, other regional parties within the alliance have floated alternative names for the leadership role.
DMK Backs MK Stalin
The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has indicated its preference for M. K. Stalin, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, as a possible leader of the alliance.
Earlier, Tamil Nadu’s Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin stated that his father has emerged as a national figure whose leadership is respected by opposition leaders across the country. According to him, many believe the political fight against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) could be coordinated under Stalin’s guidance.
Mamata Banerjee Also Proposed
Meanwhile, leaders from the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) have suggested another prominent name for the role. TMC MP Sagarika Ghose recently advocated for Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of West Bengal, to take the lead in steering the Opposition alliance.
The suggestion followed commentary from political observers who argued that Banerjee’s experience in confronting the BJP at the state level could make her a strong candidate to head a united opposition front.
A Long Road to 2029
With the next general election scheduled for 2029, the debate over leadership within the Opposition camp is still at an early stage. However, the emergence of multiple contenders reflects the evolving political dynamics within the INDIA bloc as parties begin to position themselves for future national leadership.
Summary:
Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi has reportedly agreed to Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy’s suggestion that he take on the role of Prime Ministerial candidate for the Opposition alliance. The proposal was made during a Congress leadership training programme in Telangana. As discussions about leadership within the INDIA bloc begin ahead of the 2029 elections, different parties have also proposed other names, including Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin and West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee.
