India, US and Canada Issue Travel Alerts After Death of CJNG Leader Sparks Unrest in Mexico
Widespread violence has erupted across parts of Mexico following the death of one of the country’s most feared drug cartel leaders, Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, widely known as El Mencho. In response to escalating security operations and retaliatory attacks, India, the United States, and Canada have issued advisories urging their citizens to take precautionary measures.
El Mencho Killed in Military Operation
El Mencho, the head of the powerful Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), reportedly died after being wounded during a Mexican army raid in Tapalpa, located in Jalisco state. The operation was carried out with assistance from U.S. authorities.
During the encounter, three additional cartel members were killed, three sustained injuries, and two were taken into custody. The crackdown on CJNG leadership triggered immediate unrest in several regions.
India Advises Nationals to Shelter Indoors
Following reports of violence and road blockades, the Indian Embassy in Mexico issued a public advisory urging Indian citizens to remain indoors until further notice.
The embassy specifically highlighted affected regions including:
• Jalisco state (Puerto Vallarta, Chapala, Guadalajara)
• Tamaulipas state (Reynosa and surrounding municipalities)
• Parts of Michoacán, Guerrero, and Nuevo León
Indian nationals were advised to avoid areas where law enforcement operations are underway, limit unnecessary travel, and remain alert to their surroundings. The embassy encouraged citizens to monitor local news updates and remain in contact with family members. An emergency helpline (+52 55 4847 7539) was also shared for assistance.
US and Canada Issue Similar Warnings
The United States State Department also advised American citizens in affected areas to shelter in place. According to a statement posted by the Consular Affairs division, ongoing security operations and criminal activity have led to widespread road closures.
Authorities noted that blockades have disrupted transportation, including domestic and international flights from Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta airports. Several flights were reportedly canceled as a precaution.
Canada echoed similar concerns, stating that it is closely monitoring the situation. Canadian officials advised their citizens in Michoacán, Guerrero, and Jalisco to keep a low profile and strictly follow instructions from local authorities. The advisory cited reports of armed clashes and explosions in some areas.
Violence Spreads Across Multiple States
In the aftermath of the military operation, cartel members reportedly launched coordinated retaliatory attacks in at least eight states. Armed groups blocked highways, set vehicles and businesses on fire, and clashed with security forces.
States including Jalisco, Michoacán, Guanajuato, Puebla, and Sinaloa witnessed road blockades and violent incidents.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum appealed to citizens to remain calm and rely on official sources for updates as authorities worked to stabilize the situation. Meanwhile, several U.S. and Canadian airlines suspended flights to impacted destinations amid the unrest.
