Petronet LNG Declares Force Majeure as Middle East Conflict Disrupts Gas Shipments
India’s leading liquefied natural gas importer, Petronet LNG Limited, has announced a force majeure situation following disruptions in LNG transportation caused by escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
Shipping Disruptions Amid Regional Conflict
The company stated that the ongoing hostilities involving Iran and Israel have created serious security concerns for vessels operating in the region. As a result, LNG carriers are currently unable to safely navigate through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, a crucial maritime route for global energy shipments.
Because of the heightened risks, LNG vessels are unable to reach Ras Laffan, the primary LNG export terminal operated by QatarEnergy in Qatar.
Three LNG Tankers Impacted
Petronet LNG confirmed that the disruption has affected three LNG carriers—Disha, Raahi, and Aseem—which were scheduled to transport cargo under the company’s existing supply contracts.
Due to the inability of these vessels to proceed safely to the loading terminal, the company has officially invoked the force majeure clause in its agreements.
Meanwhile, QatarEnergy has also issued a notice indicating the possibility of force majeure due to the continuing conflict and its impact on shipping operations in the region.
Domestic Buyers Informed
Following the development, Petronet LNG has notified its domestic buyers as required under gas supply agreements. The affected off-takers include:
- GAIL (India) Limited
- Indian Oil Corporation Limited
- Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited
The notifications were issued on March 3, 2026, informing them about the potential supply disruptions.
Financial Impact Uncertain
Petronet LNG clarified that acts of war are not covered under its business interruption insurance policy. Because the situation in the region remains uncertain and rapidly evolving, the company said it is currently difficult to estimate the financial consequences of the disruption.
Energy markets are closely monitoring developments in the Middle East, as any prolonged disturbance in shipping routes could affect global LNG supply chains.
Summary
Petronet LNG has declared a force majeure after escalating tensions between Iran and Israel disrupted LNG shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz. The disruption has affected three LNG tankers scheduled to load cargo from Qatar’s Ras Laffan terminal operated by QatarEnergy. Domestic buyers including GAIL, Indian Oil, and BPCL have been informed about the potential supply impact. The company said the financial implications remain uncertain due to the evolving geopolitical situation.
