Nitish Kumar Set to Resign as Bihar Chief Minister

Nitish Kumar Confirms Rajya Sabha Move, Aims to Complete ‘Four-House’ Political Milestone

Nitish Kumar, president of the Janata Dal (United), has announced that he will step down as Chief Minister of Bihar and seek election to the Rajya Sabha, ending weeks of speculation about his political future.

In a post shared on social media platform X, Kumar said he had long aspired to serve in all four legislative bodies in India’s parliamentary system—both Houses of Parliament and both Houses of the state legislature.

A Long-Held Political Goal

Reflecting on his political journey, Kumar thanked the people of Bihar for their continued support during his long tenure in public life.

He said that since the early days of his parliamentary career, he had hoped to become a member of both chambers of Parliament as well as both Houses of the state legislature. Having previously served as a Member of Parliament in the Lok Sabha, as well as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) and Member of the Legislative Council (MLC), a seat in the Rajya Sabha would complete that ambition.

Kumar also assured citizens that his shift to national politics would not affect his commitment to Bihar’s development and that he would continue supporting the state government.

Political Context Behind the Move

According to political observers, Kumar’s interest in completing this rare “four-House” milestone is also linked to the legacy of several prominent Bihar leaders who emerged from the anti-Emergency political movement of the 1970s.

Leaders such as Lalu Prasad Yadav, the late Sushil Kumar Modi, Ram Vilas Paswan, and Sharad Yadav were all part of that political generation. Many of them served in the Rajya Sabha at some point in their careers.

By securing a Rajya Sabha seat, Kumar would join the small group of leaders like Lalu Prasad Yadav and Sushil Kumar Modi who have served in all four legislative bodies of India’s parliamentary framework.

Speculation Over Bihar’s Next Chief Minister

Kumar’s planned transition has also triggered intense speculation about who will succeed him as the next Chief Minister of Bihar.

Among the names being discussed are Samrat Choudhary, the state’s Deputy Chief Minister who currently handles the home portfolio, Nityanand Rai, Minister of State for Home Affairs in the central government, and Bihar minister Dilip Kumar Jaiswal.

Choudhary is regarded as one of the most influential leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party in Bihar and previously served as the party’s state president. Rai is a three-time Member of Parliament and former MLA, while Jaiswal has served multiple terms in the state’s Legislative Council.

Another name being mentioned in political discussions is Sanjiv Chaurasiya, the MLA from Digha. However, the BJP has often surprised observers with unexpected leadership choices, leaving the final decision uncertain.

Summary

Nitish Kumar has confirmed that he will step down as Bihar Chief Minister and seek election to the Rajya Sabha, aiming to achieve the rare distinction of serving in all four legislative Houses—Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha, Legislative Assembly, and Legislative Council. His decision has sparked speculation over his successor, with several BJP leaders being considered for the top post in Bihar.
